Sample Interview Questions

Students are encouraged to book an advising appointment for a mock interview to prepare for interviews, but you can also use these questions for self-study. With the participation of a friend, they can ask you a sample question while you answer to practice interviewing.
  1. How has your education prepared you for this position? What courses have you taken which you feel are particularly relevant?
  2. We feel that you may have a deficit in this area which is essential to this position. If we offered you this position, what steps would you take to remedy the deficit?
  3. Tell us about the experience you have with the software packages we mentioned on the posting. How would you rate your proficiency with each one?
  4. Tell us what responsibility you feel is the most difficult in this job. Have you had any experience with this area?
  5. Have you hired people before? What do you look for?
  6. Tell us about an experience you have had representing a program or association for other students or professionals. 
  7. Tell us about a time when you provided orientation for new students or staff members. What were the stages that you developed to facilitate the orientation?
  8. We are developing an international professional recruitment program. What suggestions do you have for us in designing this program?
  9. Give me an example of a conflict that you had with a supervisor and tell me how you resolved it.
  10. Not all policies are popular. Tell us about a time when you had to impose an unpopular policy on other staff members.
  11. Tell us about a time when you had to deliver bad news to a candidate or colleague.
  12. Tell us about a time when you tried to change or revise a policy.
  13. Have you ever conducted a job analysis? What methods did you use to conduct this analysis? 
  14. Describe a time when you had to spread the word about a new policy or initiative to staff members. How many people did you have to communicate this change to? What would you have done differently for a larger/smaller group of personnel? What channels did you use to spread the word? Did you have a method to determine when and if the staff had heard about this policy or initiative? 
  15. Not everyone likes change, even if it will improve processes. Tell us about a time when you had to help other people through a transitionary period. How did you deal with the people who were opposed to the change? How did you deal with the people who appeared to be in favour of the change?
  16. We would like to revise our reward system for staff. Do you have any suggestions? What is the first suggestion you would implement and why?
  17. Describe a leadership role of yours and tell me why you committed your time to it.
  18. What diagrams and/or other materials do you use to capture and describe customer needs and convey technical information?
  19. Tell us about a time when you had to train another staff member. How did it go? What did you learn from the experience?
