Students are encouraged to book an advising appointment for a mock interview to prepare for interviews, but you can also use these questions for self-study. With the participation of a friend, they can ask you a sample question while you answer to practice interviewing.
  1. Why do you want this job?
  2. Please describe your past work experience to me. I am particularly interested in learning about experiences that may be relevant to this position.
  3. Which areas of the industry particularly interest you and which do you wish to move into? (Technical, management…)
  4. What do you expect from a career in computer engineering?
  5. Tell us about a weakness that you have and what steps you have taken to overcome that weakness. 
  6. Tell us about short and long-term goals that you have had and the steps you have taken to reach those goals.
  7. Tell me about a time when you worked the hardest and felt the greatest sense of achievement.
  8. What would you do if you knew you could not finish a project under budget before you even begin the project?
  9. Suppose a supervisor gives you a project to complete with very restricted time constraints. Another supervisor comes to you and gives you another project that he/she demands to be completed immediately. It is apparent that you cannot complete both projects on time. What do you do?
  10. Tell us about a time when you made an error in a team or group project. What was the nature of the error? Did it affect the work of others? What steps did you take to fix the error?
  11. Tell us about a time when you had to have an uncomfortable discussion with your supervisor.
  12. Tell me about a time when you performed a task you never handled before and how you handled the situation.
  13. Describe a project that you have worked on. What was your role in the project and how did you contribute to the outcome of the project?
  14. Tell us about a successful team that you worked on. Why do you feel the team was successful? How did you contribute to the team's success?
  15. Tell me about the last time that someone asked you to solve a problem. What was the issue? How was it solved?
  16. When working on a project, how do you set priorities? Provide us with a recent example.
  17. Describe a time when you had trouble seeing eye to eye with a colleague. What was the issue and how was it resolved?
  18. Describe a time when you had to cope with strict deadlines or time demands.
  19. Tell me about a time that you had to explain a concept to someone who had never heard that term before. What were you explaining? How did you explain it? Were you successful? What did you learn? What would you do differently next time?
