The U of A's UniForum Team is seeking one and possibly two Student Business Analysts (SBA) who will primarily focus on gathering data related to external suppliers and contractors hired by the university. The SBA(s) will also aid more generally with three other annual UniForum data collection streams, and provide additional analytical support to the UniForum Team as needed.

In collaboration with other UniForum Team members, the SBA will:
  • specialize in service contract data and information gathering;
  • evaluate data and information related to contracts for services administered across the university;
  • analyze and categorize service data and information according to program criteria;
  • perform quality assurance and data checks;
  • conduct data reviews or in-depth examinations as appropriate;
  • consult with internal units and external contractors/suppliers as required; and
  • provide support with other tasks as required.
The SBA may be required to contact university faculties and portfolios, and external contractors and suppliers, to ensure that data and information gathered meets UniForum requirements. To succeed in this role, the incumbent will need a combination of strong analytical, categorization, and communication skills. Strong technical skills (particularly in Excel) are also an asset, but not critical.

The SBA will require a keen eye for detail and investigative abilities when evaluating / gathering information from a range of invoices and project plans. An ability to work independently, maintain focus, and manage time while working through many contracts, documentation, and spreadsheets are further attributes important for this position. The ability to anticipate and communicate future challenges will also ensure that all team members have a clear understanding of work in progress and expectations.

Skills and Qualifications:

Key skills, qualifications, competencies, and attributes for the SBA position include:
  • Preference given for students in an analytical discipline, with particular expertise in quantitative analysis, statistical, and/or financial research.
  • Critical thinking and categorization skills, and a keen eye for detail, are integral.
  • Investigative abilities when evaluating and gathering information.
  • Excellent ability to use relevant computer application programs for data collection and reporting (particularly Excel, but also Google Sheets), and to learn to use new programs as needed.
  • Interest in data analysis and a curiosity about the meaning of results.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, and the ability to work efficiently independently and/or remotely.
  • Trustworthy and an ability to maintain data confidentiality.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong ability to communicate with colleagues, the university community, and external partners in a technical or non-technical style, and in some instances to troubleshoot and resolve data quality issues.
  • Exemplary interpersonal and collaborative skills. Works well with others, a reliable teammate helping to achieve objectives for the good of the university overall.
  • Experience and/or education in invoicing, contracts, statistical analysis, and/or programming would be assets, but are not required.
Other Information:

UniForum collects information on fourteen functions, which includes (as examples) finance, human resources, and information technology. The program has helped over 55 universities worldwide gain deep insights into the efficiency and satisfaction of their support services/functions. Information is gathered, analyzed, and compared across participating universities in Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. UniForum results have proven to be a key decision-making tool a the U of A, providing information in areas that were not previously available. The successful candidate(s) will be a key member of the team helping to gather this important information!

The SBA position(s) will be full-time (37.5 hours per week), ideally beginning sometime during the week of April 21, 2025 (start date negotiable), until August 18, 2025.
