Instructors are the face of DiscoverE! They bring the fun, the expertise, and the can-do spirit that makes summer camp such an unforgettable experience for our participants. Instructors lead hands-on STEM programming related to disciplines including Biomedical, Chemical & Materials, Civil & Environmental, Electrical & Computer, Mechanical, and Robotics engineering. They work with all kinds of equipment including circuit boards, soldering irons, 3D printers, and much more! Instructors teach day camp programming at the U of A's North Campus as well as in remote locations across Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

Job Overview
May-June:
- Orientation week: Instructors receive a week of training to prepare them for their role
- Curriculum review: Instructors will learn all about their assigned engineering discipline and practice running projects
- Project packing: Instructors will assist the Operations team in counting, packing, and labelling materials to be used in summer camp projects
- Events: Instructors run Demo Days and STEAM Centres to hone their presentation skills!
- Teach summer camps: Instructors primary role is to supervise participants. This includes teaching projects in the camp room, leading games and outdoor activities during break times, and making sure the kids are staying safe and having fun!
- Floating: When they are not teaching, Instructors are helping make sure the camp week is running smoothly for all 250 participants! When they are floating, Instructors help run materials to rooms, coordinate campers, and assist with supervision and cleanup.
Job Duties
- Teach engineering and scientific concepts and run hands-on projects with enthusiasm, professionalism and efficiency
- Lead tours of lab facilities in the Faculty of Engineering
- Perform classroom management for class sizes of up to 32 students
- Prepare materials for special events and summer camps; ensure necessary materials are packed, organized and in good condition
- Communicate with parents - discuss camp projects, camper behaviour, and DiscoverE policies in a polite, productive, and helpful way
- Coordinate with Junior Instructors, summer camp Volunteers, and off-campus liaisons to ensure everything runs smoothly
- Contribute to a positive team environment and report to your supervisor (Senior Instructor) and DiscoverE Management
- Follow safety and risk management procedures to ensure every participant is safe while having fun
Skills and Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications

- Experience working with children, youth, parents and/or schools
- Experience working with equity-denied groups (2SLGBTQ+, Indigenous, racialized, people with disabilities, etc.)
- Previous experience with DiscoverE or a similar organization
- Ability to learn new material and communicate information in a clear way
- Positive role model and mentor with mature interpersonal conduct
- Excellent conflict resolution and problem solving skills
- Flexible with job duties and responsibilities
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and schedules
- Ability to work as part of a large and diverse team
- Ability to work on the University of Alberta North Campus
- Ability to work and stay in a remote community for a minimum of 2 weeks
- If successful, we require a Police Information Check (with vulnerable sector check).
- If successful, we require an up-to-date Standard First Aid & CPR C training (valid until the end of your contract)
